Fish’n Canada Show Host Pete Bowman Inducted Into Canadian Angler Hall of Fame

On February 17, Pete Bowman, co-host of Fish'n Canada TV Show was inducted into the Canadian Anglers Hall of Fame. The Algoma Region would like to send out a huge congratulations to Pete. This was a much deserved award! Read the Press Release below:

Mississauga, ON, February 17, 2012: Pete Bowman, long time co-host of the popular Fish’n Canada Television Show was recently inducted into the Canadian Anglers Hall Of Fame (CAHOF). His picture now hangs on a banner among the CAHOF alumni of national fishing greats including Fish’n Canada founders Angelo and Reno Viola.

Pete stated on stage “Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be accepting this prestigious award in front of my peers, family and friends, all in the hub of the Canadian fishing industry, The Spring Fishing and Boat Show”.

Andy and Vita Pallotta, founders of the Canadian Anglers Hall Of Fame said, Pete is the first “hall of famer” ever to garner acceptance votes from the entire CAHOF alumni; support which Pete says is “overwhelming”.

The Fish’n Canada Show and Pete partnered up for the first time in the 1980’s on a part-time prostaff basis, eventually turning into a full-time gig. “Fishing for a living…” says Pete “who would have ever thought it could happen”.

“It’s people like the Viola brothers… entrepreneurs… that give guys like myself a chance” says Pete “and it’s the support of people like my family, friends and our fans that allow me to better myself each and every time I hit the water”!

When it comes to hunting tough gobblers, Kevin Bartley, owner of GobbleStalker Calls, likes to talk turkey. Kevin, of Port Hope, Ontario, has earned a solid reputation in the outdoor industry as a one of Canada's most knowledgeable wild turkey hunters with his extensive understanding of longbeards, their habits and their behaviour in the field. Kevin’s sessions will cover why hunters need to learn to walk the walk before they talk the talk of purring, clucking, gobbling and yelping. During the summer of 2011, Canadian Outdoor Writer Dale Hainer took a fly-in outpost fishing trip booked through Lauzon Aviation. Dale's article captures the beauty of the Algoma Region, the world-lcass fishing experiences for trout, walleye, northern pike, bass and the Northern hospitality of Algoma operators and outfitters.

As a 50 year old accomplished angler,hunter, outdoor writer, photographer and videographer, my home province ofOntario continually amazes me with the varying landscapes throughout its halfmillion square miles. Travelling aside, I find myself drawn back to certainregions and Algoma is tops on my list. And it’s no surprise to me that manyartists frequent this region and tour throughout via the Algoma CentralRailway! Even going back 100 years, Canada's own Group of Seven loved to come,explore, depict in charcoal and paints Algoma’s grandeur, returning to share itwith you all.

Algoma is poised richly at the northshore of Lake Huron and west Superior offering me, as an outdoorsman, easilyaccessible fishing and hunting opportunities. From my home on Lake St. Clair,it’s an exciting day’s ride through the changing landscapes to get there.

Awaiting me is a host of friendlyservices and outfitters, all wanting to help make my experience the mostrewarding possible. Take my most recent trip for example with Lauzon Aviation.One of the region’s oldest service outfitters is now run by three completegenerations of the Makela family. As with all outfitters and guides that I havemet in the area, the Makelas take great pride in their independent knowledgeand skills affording them a modest lifestyle in the north.

In no time at all,these northern traders make you feel very welcome and secure with them, as yourguest. And when it comes to flying to a remote lake in a float plane, most folkappreciate a decent sense of security!

Algoma’s rugged land and lakes was shredded by the last ice ageleaving in its retreat, deep cut lakes, sheer ridges and canyons. The waterscontained are now clean and clear and teeming with fish! Many visitors may notrealize it, but the fish of Algoma are in most part, native species with tensof thousands of years of genetics in them. Very few species have ever beenstocked which makes knowing this fact very exciting to me. Coming from the deepsouthern end of the province, it’s an assumption that most fish and game hasbeen stocked, managed, manipulated and altered for my convenience. Not so withAlgoma! These ancient species immediately gain a respect from me as I feel Ihave been allowed to enter into their world, under their scrutiny, for mutualenjoyment. Weird as it may sound you will see or “feel” what I mean when youget there!

This particular lake that I was allowed to visit, Robb Lake, waspristine to me, clean, quiet and filled with old historical Speckled and Lake Trout and some bonus stocked Rainbows. Only once were the Rainbow Trout everstocked in Robb Lake and they flourished immediately to join in the ranks ofthe residents.

Catching one of these species is not difficult when you fly intoan Algoma lake. Brightly coloured spoons trolled across any one of the numerousunderwater ridges finds some active fish. And when you are allowed in to a lake that has been respected so well byother visitors that it is hard to find any evidence of human presence, hookinginto a fish makes you feel like a 1600's exploring Voyageur!

As an artist, I cannot properly duplicate for you in photos the magnificentbeauty of these trout. I have fished many regions and Algoma native fishes aresurely a vivid, translucent, colourful sub species all in themselves. I almostfelt guilty keeping a couple for an open fire supper! For the price of air fareand lodgings, I could have chosen any one of several lakes serviced by LauzonAviation including lakes filled with Walleye, trophy Pike or Basses. I was drawnto the Trout.

My next trip may very well be at a time when I can mix a bit of Moosehunting with Bird hunting and a day back at some fall Walleye fishing. I assureyou, after all my years, that if your choice is Algoma, you will be welcomed,made to feel like a local, speechlessly awe-struck, successful on more levelsthan expected and immediately start to plan your return!

All Aboard Tracks to Trails

Winter in Algoma isn’t just another season but another extension as to how we play in Canada’s great outdoors. Downhill and cross country skiing, ice fishing, snowshoeing, we do it all but the favourite, hands down, is snowmobiling.

The minute the first snowflakes hit the ground, a ride on the trails is on every sledder’s mind. Like an itch that needs to be satisfied.

Talk to any local snowmobiler and he (or she!) will tell you that Algoma’s snowmobile trails are the best. We can’t help it, we have reason to brag: over 2,000 miles of trails carved out of rocky rugged Canadian Shield leading deep into the heart of Canadian wilderness. Sled through remote areas known only to snowmobilers and wildlife, across frozen waters, or take in breathtaking views from atop a mountain trail. It’s as awesome as it sounds.

One of Algoma’s favourite snowmobile trips is Tracks to Trails. This is an exciting (thrilling even!) one day rail excursion that takes snowmobilers up to Algoma’s incredible Northern trails. The trip begins in the city of Sault Ste. Marie, which borders on Michigan via the International Bridge.

At the downtown depot, snowmobiles are loaded into enclosed baggage cars then sit back and relax in passenger car as the train heads North. The train journeys through Algoma’s winter wonderland and the famous Agawa Canyon, where you’ll see rock walls glazed in ice and snow.

Get off the rail line at Hawk Junction (Wawa) Station, or Dubreuilville to ride the Superior Snow Challenge Loop. You can continue the train journey to the end of steel and start off your snowmobile adventure in the French Canadian town of Hearst.
